Biking Around Lake Taupō: Scenic Views, Local Culture—and a Giant Mirror Dinosaur?

Coffee, Caldera’s & Boom Boom

If you're looking for a relaxing yet inspiring way to experience Lake Taupō, our Coffee and Caldera guided e-bike tour ticks all the boxes: stunning scenery, cultural landmarks, great coffee, and yes—you read that right—a towering dinosaur sculpture that’s turning heads.

Let us take you along for the ride...

The Ride Begins at Taupō Marina

Our day starts at the picturesque Taupō Marina, where our friendly guide gets everyone set up with a modern e-bike and a quick how-to. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or haven’t ridden in years, these bikes make the journey easy and enjoyable.

From there, we hit the Great Lake Walkway—a beautifully paved and safe path that follows the shoreline of Lake Taupō. It's one of the most scenic and accessible trails in the country, ideal for riders of all levels.

Breathtaking Views & Local Wonders

As you pedal along, Lake Taupō stretches out beside you like a giant blue mirror. On a clear day, the views are spectacular—you’ll spot the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Ruapehu, Tongariro, and the famously volcanic Mt. Ngauruhoe (aka Mount Doom from The Lord of the Rings).

But it’s not just about the scenery. Along the way, your guide will point out:

  • Steaming geothermal spots along the lakeshore

  • The much-loved Love Taupō sign—perfect for a photo stop

  • Te Ātea, a carved pou made from a 2000-year-old tōtara tree

  • A variety of birdlife including swans, ducks, and native songbirds

  • Lush grasslands and colourful flower beds where families picnic and play

Coffee with a View

Midway through the tour, we stop at a lakeside café that smells like heaven. Whether you’re a fan of flat whites or iced lattes, nothing beats sipping a hot drink while looking out at the sparkling lake. Boats drift past, paddleboarders glide by, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it hard to leave.

Local Art and a Giant Dinosaur Named Boom Boom

As we continue around the lake, the tour takes an unexpected turn—into the world of large-scale public art.

Enter Boom Boom the Dinosaur.

This nearly 10-metre-tall sculpture is made from mirror-polished stainless steel and stands proudly atop a geometric corten steel base in Taupō’s Riverside Park. Commissioned by the Taupō Sculpture Trust and created to “cause a buzz,” Boom Boom certainly lives up to the mission. Locals love it, debate it, and definitely talk about it.

It’s bold, it’s shiny, and it’s completely unforgettable. As your guide shares the story behind the sculpture, it becomes clear that Boom Boom isn’t just a quirky attraction—it’s part of a growing movement to bring public art into everyday spaces around Taupō.

The Perfect Day on Two Wheels

From steaming geothermal wonders to larger-than-life art, our guided tour is more than just a bike ride—it’s a journey through the heart of Taupō.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or rediscovering your hometown, this ride offers a fresh perspective on everything that makes Taupō special: nature, culture, creativity, and a touch of unexpected fun.

So next time you're in town, hop on an e-bike and come meet Boom Boom for yourself.
