When FourB got a call from a large group of 60+ers who had gotten together to ride the Otago rail trail and now wanted a new riding challenge (but not too challenging)it was an easy decision. To ride the Timber trail with electric bikes. So FourB organised 13 high spec full suspension E-bikes for the group. While this added some extra cost to the experience none of the group regretted having the extra pedal assistance that these bikes provide.
We split the trail into two days of riding. On the way into the lodge we stopped off at Endeans mill to have a look around at the last operating Native timber mill in the area. Then it was on to the Timber trail lodge for our first nights accommodation.
Good food and plenty of chat about the upcoming adventure was had by all.
The next day after breakfast and a shuttle ride to the start of the trail in Pureora forest it was fair to say that nerves were pretty high in the group. This is a grade 3 ride in sections after all.
The day was mixed with a couple of flat tyres and some spectacular scenery. The riding pushed this group outside of their comfort zones however by the end of the day a real sense of achievement was felt. It was widely agreed that for this group the trail would have been too much without the electrical assistance.
Day 2 was met with more confidence and the group finished the day in record time spending only 4.5 hours on the trail. Once again the added assistance was well received as was the full suspension option.
As this was only the first 2 days out of the planned 3 days it meant that the 3rd day could be looked forward to with some energy left in the tank…. all be it that the batteries would need to be charged up to allow a good final day of riding as well…
If you have a mixed ability group or you just haven’t completed a lot of riding prior to your trip, consider getting FourB to put an Electric bike Timber trail package together for you.
